Will Middlebrooks was placed on the DL before today’s game against the Brewers after injuring his calf during warmups. Farrell said that he has a Grade I calf strain, but he should be able to return to the lineup after 15 days. Brock Holt was recalled from Pawtucket, and Jonathan Herrera will replace him in the lineup today.
Even though Middlebrooks struggled last year and it’s entirely conceivable that he could struggle again this year, this is definitely a loss for the Red Sox in the next 15 days. Both Holt and Herrera are going to be career journeymen, which is a downgrade from what Sox fans hope to get out of Middlebrooks. And now the team loses some of its ability to see how he progresses early in the season.
That being said, it’s 15 days, which, in regular season baseball time, is not much at all. Because of randomness and variance, the Sox won’t hurt too much for the next 2 weeks.
