Not too much to say here, since I already talked about how prioritizing Ellsbury over Cano would be stupid… but holy shit did the Yankees screw up here. Cano signed for $24 mil a year, which, let’s say, would have been about 26 if the Yanks had wanted to chop down his years to about 7 or 8. They signed Ellsbury for 21.86 per. Unbelievable. There is one second baseman who is even in the same stratosphere as Cano, and that’s the Laser Show. There are a lot of outfielders in the same tier as Ellsbury. There are rumors that they’ll now trade Brett Gardner, and, even if I doubt those are true, it would be so stupid that I would laugh my ass off. Could’ve just gone with Beltran, Cano, and McCann and called it a nice offseason.
Also, Jay-Z got Robinson Cano a contract out of New York. I love making fun of the Yankees. “I made the Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee can.”
The best part, though, might be that A-Rod’s fight vs. MLB over the suspension might have been a huge reason the Yankees couldn’t commit to both. From the 2004 purse slap of Bronson Arroyo, to suckering the Yankees into the mammoth deal in the first place, to this… isn’t it weird how A-Rod keeps helping the Red Sox from the Bronx?
